About the role : 

Cenovus is currently looking for a Senior Supervisor, Utilities, Rail & Lab who is a First Class Power Engineer to join our downstream group, located at the Lloydminster Refinery. This role is responsible ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the steam plant, water treatment facilities, compressed air plant, backup generators and all associated equipment.

Responsibilities : 

  • Supervise all phases of the steam plant operation to maintain energy production at optimum and peak efficiency.
  • Supervise Control Lab operations to maintain a maximum testing efficiency and product control ensuring ISO 9001:2015 Standards are met
  • Supervise Rail loading operations to maintain a safe operation while ensuring product shipments are met as per marketing requirements.
  • Ensure all safety, environmental, operational and integrity related regulations, standards and procedures are followed by all staff.
  • Liaise with Engineering to recommend and implement operational improvements, design changes and energy conservation techniques to maximize cost effectiveness and reduce overall energy consumption.
  • Manage power engineering requirements for the refinery as specified by the provincial authority and be the main point of contact for ABSA.
  • Work collaboratively with Maintenance to ensure equipment is maintained as per Cenovus standards and ABSA requirements.
  • Effectively manage Utilities, Rail and Laboratory workforce including review and approval of timesheets and exceptions.
  • Execute the Operator training process, specifically – conduct evaluations, training and competency assessments.
  • Ensure all Utility, Rail and Control Lab infrastructure requirements are met; including updated policies and procedures, work orders, sample shipments, inventory levels and various programs, schedules and logs as required.
  • Provide input into the preparation of yearly operating and capital budgets and reviewing operating costs.
  • Lead and/or participate in incident investigations.

Candidate requirements : 

  • Legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • First Class Power Engineer certification valid for the province of Alberta; candidates with significant progress towards their first class certification may be considered.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a supervisory role managing a team of 10 or more.
  • Minimum 10 years related experience in a heavy oil plant.
  • Technical background/diploma in heavy oil product testing would be an asset.
  • Experience and understanding of safety and regulatory standards and procedures.
  • Experience with cost management and budgeting processes.
  • Knowledge of all steam plant equipment, distribution equipment and plant hazards.
  • Strong working knowledge of integrated DCS/PLC systems.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook and SAP.
  • Excellent decision making and trouble shooting skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, teamwork and conflict management skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Class 5 drivers’ license. For this position you will be required to maintain a Class 5 driver’s license, a satisfactory driving record, and adhere to the appropriate Company policies and guidelines. A driver’s abstract will be one of the background checks requested in the Pre-employment Screening for the final candidate.
  • As this position has been identified as safety sensitive, employment of a final candidate selected for this position will be conditional upon successful completion of required pre-employment medical and alcohol/drug assessments.
