About the role:

The Thermal Reservoir Development Engineering team defines and scopes sustaining pad and well design for Cenovus’ fourteen SAGD assets. The team is accountable to ensure design is reflective of optimized development and operating strategies, working closely with geoscientists and numerous vested stakeholders.

The main accountability of this role is to define and scope SAGD pad and well design. Additionally, you will work to identify and evaluate opportunities to optimize development through either simulation or operating analogues. There will be opportunities for mentorship, ensuring consistency in development practices while fostering effective communication across disciplines. Prior experience working on commercially operating SAGD assets is a requirement.

  • Working with geoscientists, with feedback from Production and Reservoir Optimization, scope the most value accretive SAGD pad and well pair development. This involves taking pad and well planning from conception through to drilling and completion, thus also working with Drilling and Completions teams.

  • Forecast upcoming well expectations

  • Model and design optimized well completion

  • Generate ideas for optimizing development and evaluate using simulation or producing analogues

  • Within the team, support consistency and improvements in process and outputs

Candidate requirements:

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) accredited with APEGA

  • Prior experience working on commercially operating SAGD assets, notably in production, development, completions or reservoir engineering capacities

  • Integrated understanding of the SAGD process with strong familiarity with development

  • Demonstrated capacity to learn new concepts quickly and ability to apply technical concepts into practice

  • Ability to make effective decisions in an environment where there is uncertainty in the subject matter and where multi-disciplinary input is required
